Gabriel Macht Talks SUITS Finale, Donna Love Declaration & Family Troubles

This Wednesday USA Network’s Suits is headed towards an explosive finale when Harvey Specter clashes once again with insidious corporate raider Forstman (Eric roberts) and dogged SEC investigator Sean Cahill (Neal McDonough).

But in order to put his nemeses behind him for good, Harvey will be forced to revisit his own past and his guilt over younger brother Marcus.

Just how is Marcus involved with Forstman, and what morally dubious act did Harvey carry out on his behalf?

And what fallout from last week’s “I love you Donna,” will our favorite will-they-won’t-they couple suffer as a result of Harvey’s declaration?

ScreenSpy sat down with Gabriel Macht to talk about what’s in store for Harvey Specter on Wednesday.

Read on for full highlights from our call.

Q. You directed the mid-season premiere this year. Tell us about your experience.

Gabriel Macht: What can I say? So we shoot 16 episodes straight through. We have a week here or there, or sometimes a month here or there, as far as hiatuses go for the writers to keep up with the show. One of the hiatuses gave me a week in advance where I wasn’t working as an actor to prep for my director’s episode.

It was great. The stakes were so high. Louis had gotten all this information. He worked it out that Mike’s a fraud. It allowed all of us to work in this insular space where it was really all about the characters and how our loyalties stay true to each other – or didn’t. And that’s why Louis kind of went crazy on all of the characters [laughing].

I thought it was one of the most creative experiences I’ve ever had. The actors along with the crew were incredible with me. They were so collaborative. It was really a special time for all of us to just trust each other, and we had a great episode as far as the writing goes. I think it came out amazing. Just the experience, the process of it and the product at the end, I thought it looked great. I was happy with my director’s cut as well, which maybe one day people will see.

Q. Would you do it again?

Gabriel Macht: If it works out with the hiatus, and works out with the episodes I would love to do it again.

Q. We heard Harvey say to Donna “I love you.” Does that mean he’s ‘in love’ with her?

Gabriel Macht: Y’know, everyone is going to have their own interpretation of that, which is what makes art such an incredible medium. I think that there was a lot at stake in this last episode. Of course, she means so much to him. I think it’s really in the eye of the viewer to take away what they think. I know the producers and writers and some of the actors all have different ideas about that moment.

It was a very complicated moment. I think it was something the fans really wanted to see. It blew some people away in many ways. The fallout of that moment happens in the next episode. We’re going to see how that all manifests.

Q. How do you interpret that moment?

Gabriel Macht: As far as I’m concerned? I actually find it really hard to answer that question. I think it’s a complicated thing. They’ve been together for so many years. They did have that one time. They decided not to move forward with an intimate relationship. I have always looked at it in a similar way to Bond and Moneypenny. She is his better half, but I don’t know if she’s the one, y’know? I think it’s complicated, and we’ll see what course it takes over the next episode for sure, and season 5 – if it brings them closer or pushes them away. [sing-song voice] We’ll have to see-ee! [laughing].

But honestly? Just as you feel you’re not really in the know? I am in the exact same place as you. I don’t know where they’re going. I have no idea. I haven’t talked to anybody. The powers that be have not told me “Hey this is where they’re going!”

Pictured: Sarah Rafferty as Donna Paulsen -- (Photo by: Shane Mahood/USA Network)

Pictured: Sarah Rafferty as Donna Paulsen — (Photo by: Shane Mahood/USA Network)

Q. Talk us through that scene in Donna’s apartment.

Gabriel Macht: There was quite an emotional stake there. These guys are talking about their feelings and Harvey’s not really one to talk about his feelings. He really holds it close to his chest. I think in that moment, he was trying to do everyting that Donna has been telling him to do, either with Scottie or Zoe or whover, which is to bring his shield down.

We tried a million different versions of “I love you Donna.” One was super light. It was like “Oh, you know I love you, come on, sheesh!”

They happened to pick that one and we’ll see how it manifests next week.

Q. Can you talk a little about your great chemisty with Sarah Rafferty?

Gabirel Macht: I think it’s a combination of a million things. I think our relatioship is definitely a part of it. We’ve had a ton of life where we’ve both been present for each other. There have been births and deaths and friendships that have failed. We’ve just been in the mix for 20 years. It’s a real friendship and I think that really helps.

In addition to that I think it comes back to the writing. I think Aaron [Korsh] has really written these two characters very specifically. The way they interact with each other is very entertaining. They’re just two sides of a coin.

Sara and I have a different process for how we each work, and I think we’ve both been really supportive of each other’s processes and figuring out how we can get each other to the best place. And, at the end of the day, we can make each other laugh. That makes it a lot more free and open. I think we’re just really comfortable with each other and it shows.

Q. What can you tease about this season’s finale?

Gabriel Macht: I think it’s what people are going to want. I think that Aaron and the cast and everyone is on the same page. We’re giving the fans what they want. I say that with the caveat that some people want what they say they want and some people want the opposite of what they say they want if that makes any sense.

What was very interesting to me was that I read some review of last week’s episode “Intent” and there were some comments beneath. Someone was making predictions about what was going to happen in the next episode, and I don’t know if this person was involved in Production but boy! They nailed it! They said ‘This is gonna happen, and this is gonna happen, and THIS is gonna happen.’ It was like BANG! That person just got it. A lot of others tried their hand at it too and they just failed miserably.

In next week’s episode, our finale, we’re dealing with a lot of things in the present. Some of the stuff that happened at the end of episode 4×10 comes back to haunt us as far as Forstman goes. Željko Ivanek’s character is involved, and we have to get to the bottom of that threat. Forstman poses, what I have felt in all four seasons, as the largest threat.

We also delve into a flashback of how we first meet Forstman, and what kind of influence he has on Harvey. In one of the episodes at the very beginning of the season, Mike makes a deal with Forstman, Harvey says ‘No, no you can’t go there,” because of what he’ll do. That story is exlained in 4×16. And it’s a flashback. We’ll see Harvey early on. That’s when we’re actually going to meet Marcus, who is Harvey’s brother. Billy Miller and I had a good time working together and I bet in season 5 we’re going to explore that relationship more. He was excellent.

Pictured: (l-r) Billy Miller as Marcus Specter, Gabriel Macht as Harvey Specter -- (Photo by: Shane Mahood/USA Network)

Pictured: (l-r) Billy Miller as Marcus Specter, Gabriel Macht as Harvey Specter — (Photo by: Shane Mahood/USA Network)

Q. What can you tell us about Harvey’s relationship with Marcus?

Marcus has had some gambling issues. Harvey feels super responsible for influencing him in betting and gambling. Harvey is Marcus’ older brother and I’m sure it started off with them betting on everything when they were kids, and it just got out of hand.

It became a problem, a problem that Harvey was able to work out and deal with, but for Marcus it became a really big problem.

What you’ll see is Harvey making some moral sacrifices. He gets involved with Forstman and it creates problems for his brother and the two of them. That guilt has lasted for many years. So we’re dealing with some of that and how Harvey is really protective of his brother and sensitive to what his brother’s needs are.

Billy was just great, and a great match for me. He’s got a little bit of that tough guy thing that we’ve created with Harvey, so I think there’s going to be some good stuff for us to play together in the coming years. So we’ll see. We’ll see how it turns out.

Suits‘ season 4 finale airs Wednesday at 10/9c on USA Network.

“I got senior partner. I got Donna. I win,” Louis triumphantly tells Harvey in this new promo trailer for Suits fifth season.

The show returns to USA Network on June 24 with “Denial” an episode which sees Harvey adjusting to life without his right hand. And by right hand, we mean Donna. Obviously.

Despite Harvey’s cruel brushoff (he’s totally faking it), and Donna’s enthusiasm (she’s totally faking it too. Maybe.) to begin a new chapter of her working life with long time admirer and friend Louis, this is one split that definitely won’t end here.

Will Louis’ gloating spur Harvey to action? And just how many mistakes are too many mistakes as far as Jessica is concerned?

We don’t know, but we can’t wait to find out.

If only Harvey knew what we all know. When it comes to Donna, there just isn’t any replacing her.

However Suits’ July 1st episode will see him attempt to do just that in an attempt to sort out his increasingly chaotic work environment. Donna 2.0? We don’t think so!

Meanwhile, on the work front, Mike will take on a case as a favor, a decision he he must justify to Jessica – while Rachel’s father, Robert Zane, offers some unsolicited advice about Rachel’s engagement.

And while Louis becomes embroiled in surprising money matters, an up-and-coming partner, Jack, makes his presence known to Jessica, confronting her about whether Harvey’s way of doing business is beneficial to the firm.

Catch the action Wednesday, July 1 (9-10 p.m. ET) on USA Network.

7 Things to Know About SUITS Season 5 Premiere

Suits’ season 5 premiere is well named.

The episode will find Harvey in a state of denial as he refuses to accept the new normal: After 12 years of loyalty Donna has finally left him for Louis, following his inability to come clean about his real feelings for her.

Sure that it’s only a matter of time before she returns, the premiere will see Harvey attempting to play down Donna’s decision, and continue, temporarily, without her.

However when his waiting game starts to affect not only his professional life, but his health too, Harvey will be forced to reach out to an unlikely source for help. Prepare to see Harvey Specter more vulnerable than you’ve ever seen him, Suits fans.

To make matters worse, an up-and-coming partner with reservations about Harvey’s way of doing business has impressed Jessica, and when a new case that calls for complete focus starts to go sideways, Jessica sends a warning shot over Harvey’s bow. Find a way to make it work without Donna, or she will.

Can Harvey bring his A game, or will the loss of Donna prove too much to handle?

We’ve seen “Denial” a little earlier than most, thanks to our friends at USA Network and have 7 new teasers to share with you.

As usual, no major spoilers! We want you to enjoy this episode as much as we did.

Here then are 7 things to know about the Suits season 5 premiere “Denial.”

Harvey’s Worst Nightmare

Want to know what Harvey’s worst nightmare is?

Then you won’t want to miss the opening scene of the premiere episode.

We’re not going to spoil it for you, but we can tell you it involves professional embarrassment, Jessica, Donna, and the words “Sorry Harvey, you’re on your own.”

What a way to kick off the season.

SUITS Season 5 Premiere Review: Ripping Off the Band Aid

$

By Lewis Richards

Wednesday evening saw the return of Suits for its 5th season, and thank the TV gods for that!

The premiere begins by showing us that the usually untouchable Harvey Specter is in-fact human, and it becomes clear he is having real issues dealing with the loss of Donna, so much so that he is seeking professional help.

When Harvey is handed Donna’s official two weeks notice, it finally sinks in that she is serious about leaving him for Louis and not staying with him, as he had previously predicted.

Harvey refuses to allow Donna to spend her final 2 weeks searching for her replacement, seemingly out of spite, and claims he prefers to “rip the band aid off.”

Donna is immediately relieved of her position as Harvey dismisses her from his office.

During the episode, cuts to Harvey at a psychiatrist’s office reveal he is suffering from extreme anxiety. The mighty Harvey Specter, reduced to panic attacks and vomiting by his former long term secretary! The theory that Harvey is in love with Donna is most evident in this episode (not a tear was shed for Scotty). Despite all this, Harvey manages to keep his anxiety issues to himself and eventually decides to accept Donna is gone (just down the hall) for good.

Whilst Harvey has had his bubble burst by Donna, at the opposite end of the spectrum Mike and Rachel have created their own “bubble” of happiness and secrecy for their engagement deciding to only let Rachel’s family and Donna in on the news for now.

This changes when Mike can’t help but tell his friend and mentor Harvey within seconds of entering his office. At first Harvey is dismissive of the news, acting as if he doesn’t care, but he later softens after tying some loose ends together for a case and takes Mike to watch the Mets to congratulate him on his engagement.

This episode focused quite a lot on Harvey, but it was fantastic to see how Donna leaving hit him extremely hard, right in the feels! (well, she is Donna!)

There are some good foundations laid with Louis and Donna having a rocky start to their new partnership too.

“Denial” is a great start for what is hopefully an even greater season.

Additional Notes:

Will Darvey ever reunite?

Who will Harvey bring in to replace Donna?

When will Louis say “You just got LITT UP” again?

SUITS REVIEW: Harvey and Louis at War in “Compensation”

$
0
0

By Lewis Richards

Wednesday night’s Suits episode “compensation” served as a secondary premiere in the in the sense that it hinted which potential story arcs we will follow over the course of the season ahead, something episode 1 didn’t have the chance to do last week. While we were happy to see the catastrophic fallout of season 4 take center stage in the premiere, we were intrigued to see some solid story directions taking shape this week.

The episode begins with Robert and Rachel Zane spending some father daughter time together at a restaurant. Rachel becomes impatient with her father trying to “control” her. Robert insists that Rachel looks over a pre-nuptial agreement that he has had put together, much to her dismay.

A happy looking Mike meets his old colleagues Jimmy and Harold at a bar for a celebratory drink. After a few jokes at Harold’s expense Jimmy gifts Mike with a “do-gooder” case, the type of case that allows Mike to do his work and help people who need it. At this point Mike isn’t aware that the case carries more sentimental weight than Jimmy makes out.

Back at Pearson Specter Litt the tension is unbearable as Harvey and Donna cross paths. They proceed with small talk before Harvey coldly confirms to Donna he is replacing her that very same day and leaves abruptly.

Harvey begins by interviewing a beautiful blonde who comes across eerily similar to Donna with her level of confidence, He is unimpressed and seems determined to not fall for the same trick twice. Harvey cuts the interviewing process short (as we know he loves to do) by skipping the queue of other beautiful women to pick an older larger lady named Gretchen. As Gretchen later points out Harvey supposedly does this to protect himself from future heartbreak. Harvey later enjoys a moment with Gretchen when she proves that he has made a good decision by hiring her. Harvey is pleasantly surprised and expresses this with a rare sincere smile.

A heart warming conversation between Jessica and Rachel leads to the realization that her controlling father is just protective.  Regardless of that fact, however, Rachel will not be forced into signing anything. Mike decides to break the news to Robert in person. He respects that Rachel is defying him out of love and not out of spite for her father’s misguided efforts. Mike also has an ulterior motive for visiting Robert which can hopefully benefit both parties.

Louis continues to be his own worst enemy as his plot to get Harvey on team Litt goes horrendously wrong, this triggers a chain of unfortunate events which escalates into a declaration of war!

One thing we definitely know is that the dust has nowhere near settled in the battle for Donna. Jessica is going to have her hands full as the Pearson Specter Litt family prepares for another sibling-esque rivalry.

It will be interesting to see how far her tolerance of their conflict reaches as she literally threatens to “slap the taste” out of both Harvey and Louis.

Thought you’d seen the last of Travis Tanner? Guess again!

Harvey’s old rival is set to make a return to USA Network’s Suits in July 15th’s installment.

“Toe to Toe” will see Harvey coming to grips once again with his nemesis, except this time, Tanner claims to be a changed man.

Can we really trust anything this guy claims to be true?

Back on the case, Harvey’s sessions with Agard reveal the influence his past has on his present.

Meanwhile, Jessica intercedes in the ever escalating war between Harvey and Louis, by telling Louis to patch things up with Harvey. However, the plan may just make an enemy of Jack.

We’ve got first look images from the episode to share in our galley below.

SUITS Review: “No Refills” Saw Harvey on the Back Foot

Wednesday night’s Suits episode “No Refills” kept us on our toes with a dramatic change in direction.

Just when it seemed Louis was using Jack as a tool in his personal war with Harvey, Jack emerged as the true threat, as Louis realises too much is at stake in his personal conflict and decides to concentrate on keeping Donna happy as his secretary.

Let’s recap.

Jessica warns Harvey that Jack’s influence is rising and Harvey would be smart to make an effort to sweeten their relationship. Harvey reluctantly accepts that Jessica is right and makes a genuine effort to schmooze jack with the gift of lunch and golf with (guest star) Charles Barkley, as suggested by Gretchen.

Jack throws the offer in Harvey’s face and and reaffirms his intention to go after Harvey’s money. Harvey, now preparing for all out war approaches his brother in arms Mike for backup before Gretchen again, proves that she is just as (if not more?) Donna, than Donna herself.

Louis tries to cement his relationship with Donna by showering her with gifts and friendship, but she correctly suspects that this is another manifestation of Louis’ fear that she will leave him, and gets Louis to admit that Harvey has threatened to “take” Donna away from him.

Jessica scolds Mike for taking the insurance case regardless of her orders to drop it. Mike, being the sharpest tool in the box knows Jessica won’t drop the case as it will show weakness, and points out that although Jessica says he isn’t Harvey, he has just navigated their debate in the most “Harvey” way possible. Jessica allows the newly formed Zane/Ross partnership to pursue the case, but not without first instructing Robert to treat Mike as a partner.

With the Zane/Ross partnership now in full swing, Mike and Robert visit their client who is cautious about signing with them until an emotional recollection of Mike’s past puts her fears to rest, and she decides to sign. Robert is impressed with Mike but the feeling is not at first mutual when Robert doesn’t follow Jessica’s instruction to treat Mike as a partner. A display of greatness from the always impressive Mike Ross leads to a usually-stubborn Robert Zane apology.

Meanwhile, Harvey and his newly loaded weapon of mass client stealing, has put a plan in place to fight fire with fire by going after Jack’s biggest client. Of course, Jack doesn’t take kindly to this, choosing to double down on his efforts to take Harvey’s money, in retaliation, and we for the first time just how ruthless Jack can really be when he blackmails Louis into helping him take Harvey down.

However, Harvey’s plan is shut down when he is unable to use his star power to get Charles to help him take Jack’s client. It just keeps getting worse for him when a furious Donna confronts him, causing another panic attack.

Harvey just manages to salvage his last scrap of composure to deal with Jack before dealing with his own anxiety.

“No refills” showed us that Harvey is still dealing with his Donna anxiety and that there is an intricate web of conflict and friendship being woven with Jessica holding each strand of the web together. Can Jessica mediate it all at the same time?

We can’t help but wonder if there still be three names on the walls of the Pearson Specter Litt reception when the dust settles?

Thought you’d seen the last of Travis Tanner? Guess again!

Harvey’s old rival is set to make a return to USA Network’s Suits in July 22nd installment.

“Toe to Toe” will see Harvey coming to grips once again with his nemesis, except this time, Tanner claims to be a changed man.

Can we really trust anything this guy claims to be true? His appearance certainly causes conflict for Mike and Harvey, who must decide whether to believe him – or bury him.

On a more personal front, during one of Harvey’s sessions with Agard, she links his personal stake in the Tanner fight to issues from his past.

Meanwhile, Jessica intercedes in the ever escalating war between Harvey and Louis, by telling Louis to patch things up with Harvey. However, the plan she devises with Rachel and Donna may just make an enemy of Jack Soloff.

We’ve got first look images from the episode to share in our galley below.

It’s one thing for a man to steal another man’s secretary right from under his nose.

Especially if the second man is suffering from emotional autism where his feelings for his (super amazing) secretary are concerned.

But it’s another thing entirely if, in retaliation for the secretary-stealing act, the second man then goes and sleeps with the first man’s sister. Even if she is Amy Acker.

Confused? Let this new promo trailer for Suits explain everything.

Suits continues on USA Network, Wednesdays at (9-10 p.m. ET).

SUITS Review: The Ice Thaws in “No Puerdo Hacerlo”

By Lewis Richards

The “No Puerdo Hacerlo” episode of Suits wasted no time adding to the drama of the Pearson Specter Litt family by throwing a proverbial spanner in the works in the form of Louis’ sister.

The beautiful Esther first encounters Harvey as he is leaving the building. Harvey wastes no time in using his silver tongue to help her bypass security and then proceeds to relentlessly flirt, even going as far as to playfully offer her breakfast at his place the following morning. No exchange of names necessary. Smooth, Harvey.

While Harvey gets side-tracked, Mike proceeds to his meeting with Robert only to be greeted by Katrina (Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit). After a classic exchange of witty banter between the former colleagues, Katrina tells Mike she has concluded that he is responsible for getting her a job with Robert and wants to thank him. Mike plays down his part, telling her Rachel is responsible. A thankful Katrina directs Mike to the correct conference room for his meeting before leaving.

We soon learn that Esther is in fact Louis’ sister. Esther tells her brother of her divorce from husband Jeffrey and asks him to get the great Harvey Specter on the case. Louis is reluctant at first as Harvey is currently still angry about the purposely leaked details of his salary, and ensuing pay cut, but following a prompt about Harvey understanding the bonds of family from Donna he decides to take a leap of faith.

Mike, having finally reached his destination, finds that a less than satisfactory offer has been made to his clients, one in which the payout in their class action suit could be significantly lower than he feels they deserve. Robert however has already decided that the offer will be accepted, and as he and Mike go head to head on how they should proceed, Robert puts his foot down and dismisses Mike from his office. Ouch! so much for equal partners.

AND THAT IS ALL BEFORE THE TITLES RUN, PEOPLE.

Louis takes Donna’s advice and approaches Harvey, admitting to his would-be friend that it’s a family matter and he can’t let his sister down. Harvey (still unaware the woman whom he met in the lobby is Esther) grudgingly agrees to help Louis — in addition to a promise not to sleep with her. Harvey later reveals to Jessica that he views helping Louis as his chance to get back on track. Has Harvey finally turned a corner in his conflict with Louis?

After Mike convinces Robert to give him a chance to get an increased offer, their meeting with the insurance company backfires. Robert reveals he has gone above Mike’s head and has presented the original offer to their clients anyway. A bold and furious Mike confronts Jessica in her office only to be chopped down to size as he seems to forget who is top of the food chain within Pearson Specter Litt.

Another spat between Harvey and Donna results in Donna storming out of his office. #Darvey looks increasingly like a distant memory as the weeks go on. Nevertheless, Donna’s words cause Harvey to have an epiphany during a meeting with Jeffrey and Esther, and though it means he has found the loop hole that can win them the case, he is unable to deliver the final blow.

Meanwhile, Mike puts Katrina in the corner, asking for information on Robert’s clients as he aims to expose potential foul play on his future father-in-law’s part (really, Mike!). Katrina withholds as much as she can but gives way to the sharpness of Mike’s wits. Mike quickly takes this information to Jessica.

Esther meets Harvey to confirm her divorce terms. After Harvey opens up about why he doesn’t like to deal with divorce cases, Esther agrees to sign 25% of her company over to Jeffrey. She then proceeds to take Harvey up on his earlier offer of breakfast and the two leave together.

Louis, unable to stay out of Harvey and Esther’s case as per Harvey’s original terms, discovers that Esther is signing more of her company over than the original agreement. He immediately (incorrectly) deduces that Harvey has “screwed” her (if only he knew) in an attempt to hit Louis’ family in the pocket, as he was similarly hit by Louis’ hand. After being confronted by Louis, Harvey tells him that the larger percent agreement was Esther’s decision, based on a desire to leave the past behind and move on without acrimony. Louis immediately storms out.

Mike and Robert are about to go at it over the conflict of interest that hangs over their case. However before the fireworks can kick off Queen Jessica enters and informs the two of them that she has in fact resolved the situation whilst saving Robert from breaking the law.

Esther later enters Harvey’s office and brings Louis’ gratitude before saying goodbye, An emotionally refreshed Harvey reaches out to both Louis and Donna before clocking out for the day, thanking Donna for 12 years of faithful service.

Maybe there is hope for #Darvey after all?

Unless someone finds out about Esther.

Suits airs Wednesdays at 9-10 p.m. ET on USA Network.
